Masters scholarships in Social Work for the 2021/2022 Academic Year

The Academic Registrar, Makerere University invites applications from suitable candidates from Uganda and Rwanda for a fully funded Masters scholarship in Social Work for the 2021/2022 Academic Year.

The Scholarship is part of a 6- year project on ‘Building Resilient Communities through Inclusive Education in Eastern Africa’, implemented by the Department of Social Work, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) in partnership with University of Agder in Norway, University of Rwanda and Institute of Social Work in Tanzania. The objective of the scholarship is to enable academically qualified individuals from vulnerable and marginalised groups and communities that would not afford postgraduate education without support, to attain such an education. It is expected that upon graduation scholarship beneficiaries can proactively contribute towards socio-economic transformation of their communities.

Target Scholarship beneficiaries and criteria for the Scholarship

  1. The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree in Social Work or other related Social Science discipline, from an accredited and recognised institution, with a Minimum of an Upper Second Class or its equivalent. For students applying from Rwanda and Tanzania, who wish to complete their programme at Makerere University, their academic qualifications will have to undergo a certification process from the Uganda National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).
  2. Applicants must be citizens of Uganda or Rwanda, resident in the respective country at the time of the application and ready to stay and work in their home country upon completion of their studies.
  3. At least one year work experience in the social development sector
  4. Should be below 35 years of age at the time of applying.
  5. Must be from a genuinely poor, vulnerable or disadvantaged socio-economic background.
  6. Must be ready to take on fulltime studentship at the enrolling University.
  7. Should not hold any other scholarship for an academic programme at this or any other university and has not received a scholarship for an equivalent programme in the past (e.g. those seeking to do a second Masters’ degree)
  8. Should demonstrate specific interest in pursuing a career in social work/social development.
  9. The selection criteria will aim at gender balance and give priority to the gender category that is considered underrepresented in post graduate programme in the host country.
  10. Persons with Disabilities, and individuals from ethnic minority and marginalised communities are encouraged to apply.
  11. Students will be required to undertake mandatory field work from their countries of origin during the two-year programme.

Scholarship Coverage

  1. The scholarship will be limited to tuition, functional fees (e.g., library and internship fees), an allowance for field-based research, and a modest stipend for the stipulated period of study (2 years for the MSW).

Scholarship Conditions

  1. Six (6) scholarships are available in this call (3 for Rwanda and 3 for Uganda)
  2. The award covers only 2 years specified for the MSW program.
  3. The scholarship does not cover costs associated with retakes. Being asked to stay put due to poor academic performance automatically leads to cancellation of the scholarship.
  4. Failure to complete studies and graduate within the stipulated programme period without sound reason (unrelated to illness or other such conditions) will lead to automatic cancellation of the scholarship and under certain circumstances, a refund may be demanded.
  5. Payments of tuition and functional fees will be made directly to the University and stipend to the student’s bank account.
  6. Every beneficiary is expected to exhibit exemplary conduct both in and outside the University. Indiscipline and gross misconduct may result into summary termination of the scholarship.

A completed application should include the following: 

  1. A fully completed application form as specified in the University Call for Applications.
  2. A two-page curriculum vitae showing academic qualifications, work experience and any other relevant information.
  3. Letter of motivation and justification why the scholarship should be awarded based on the specified criteria (Max. 1000 words)
  4. At least two letters of recommendation from 1. an academic referee and 2. Professional (e.g. current employer) referee.
  5. Proof of vulnerability/disadvantage (e.g. could be a letter of endorsement from a local authority)
  6. Photocopies of Certified Academic Documents including Undergraduate, ‘O’ and  ‘A’ level Certificates.
  7. A copy of the applicant’s Birth Certificate and National Identification document

Application Procedure

1.   Visit the Makerere University’s Admissions URL https://admissions.mak.ac.ug and generate a Payment Reference Number (PRN) by following the guide below.

2.  Sign up using full name, e-mail and Mobile No. Please note that your name must be similar to the one on your supporting academic documents for your application to be considered valid.

3.   A password will be sent to both your e-mail and mobile number.

4. The system will prompt you to change the password to the one you can easily remember.

5. To fill a form the applicant clicks on the APPLY NOW button displayed on the appropriate scheme i.e. Postgraduate and Taught PhD or PhD Research

6. Obtain a payment advice slip by clicking on “Pay for Form” button7. Make a payment at any of the following Banks:

For foreign applicants, application fees can be transferred either by EFT or any other means in UGX to a designated URA collection account in Bank of Uganda as follows:

7. Print 2 copies of the filled biodata form and attach 2 certified copies of your academic documents, 2 copies of all other relevant academic documents, 2 passport photos and the three referees’ letters of recommendation.
