IP and Patenting

The Directorate of Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) in liaison with the Directorate of Legal Affairs (DLA) is in charge of all Intellectual Property (IP) and Patenting activities at Makerere University.

In accordance with provisions in the Makerere University’s Intellectual Property Policy, the University owns any intellectual property created by its employees in the course of their employment. Other provisions on ownership may apply in certain circumstances such as collaborative and sponsored research.

The Directorate of Legal Affairs is the repository of all Partnership Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding and Contracts.

What is Intellectual Property (IP)?
It refers to creations of the intellect, such as inventions; literary and
artistic works; designs, symbols, names and images used in commerce.

What is a Patent?
It is an exclusive right granted for an invention. The invention may be a product or process which offers a new way of doing something or presents a technical solution to a problem.
