Call for Applications: Departmental Grant by Departments Hosting Fellows SECA Early-Career Research Fellowships

Makerere University received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York aimed at Supporting Early-Career Academics at Makerere University (SECA). This two-year grant focuses on enhancing the research capacity of Makerere University staff by providing research fellowships to 17 early-career academics, tenable at Makerere University. The duration of the grant is from October 1st 2019 to September 30th 2021. A component of this fellowship provides a competitive departmental grant of USD 7,000 for departments hosting the successful Carnegie SECA fellows. The early-career fellowship aims at identifying and supporting future research leaders across all disciplines; and creating a pool of new doctoral supervisors. Therefore, the activities proposed by the applying department should align to these aims.

The DRGT now invites applications from the following eligible departments: Dept. of Agricultural & Bio systems Engineering (ABE), CAES, Dept. of Extension & Innovation Studies, CAES, Dept. of Forestry, Biodiversity & Tourism, CAES, Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering, CEDAT, Dept. of Fine Art, CEDAT, Dept. of Humanities and Language Education, CEES, Institute of Open Distance & eLearning (IODeL), CEES, Child Health and Development Centre, CHS, Sch. of Gender & Women Studies, CHUSS, Dept of Journalism & Communication, CHUSS, Dept. of Population Studies, CoBAMS, Dept. of Policy & Development Economics, CoBAMS, Dept. of Information Technology, CoCIS, Dept. of Bio-security, Ecosystem & Veterinary Public Health, CoVAB, Dept. of Bio molecular & Bio laboratory Sciences (BBS), and Dept. of Wild Life & Aquatic Animal Resources, CoVAB.

ONLY Applications from the Heads of the above listed Departments shall be accepted.

Eligible Activities

The department applying for the grant should propose activities that will strengthen academic engagement and create a more research active department. For example, maintenance of research infrastructure, development of new courses, lunchtime seminar series, finance publication, skills enhancement courses, procurement of teaching materials, etc. Please note that requests to fund publications should be made only when papers are written and ready for publication, or in the publication pipeline (submitted or accepted).

Application Checklist

One copy of the complete Concept Note, including:

  1. Cover page (Word doc, PDF) with signatures.
  2. Project Description (Max. 3 pages, Arial font, size 12, one and half line spacing)
  3. A realistic budget with a justification should be attached. USD 1,000 should be reserved by the department for Monitoring and Evaluation by DRGT.

Reporting Requirements

The proposed activities must be completed within 6 months. The department must submit a narrative and financial report on the implementation of the grant to the Director, Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, not later than one month after the completion of the grant. Departments that have chosen to finance publications should attach such publications and submitted manuscripts to the report.
