Makerere University’s Directorate of Research and Graduate Training in collaboration with Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) hosted a series of roving seminars on Intellectual Property (IP) from 2nd to 10th September 2024. The objective of the roving seminars was to promote the international filing of patents through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system by universities and Research & Development (R&D) organizations in order to improve the global ranking of local universities and R&D organizations.
On 6th September 2024, Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held a seminar at Makerere University senate building for universities and Research & Development institutions to build their capacity to file international patent applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system.
The seminar was opened with remarks from Prof. Buyinza Mukadaasi the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry Arinaitwe (DVC F&A), Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho (Registrar General, URSB) and Ms. Nyalleng Pii (WIPO). In attendance were representatives from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and other universities in Uganda; R&D Institutions, the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) and Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) expressed interest in hosting such seminars for their staff and students. Prof. Robert Wamala, the Director of Research and Graduate Training provided the closing remarks for the workshop.
